A KRLS library card is free to any resident of our five counties.

Bring a valid Minnesota driver’s license, a Minnesota I.D. card or a tribal card with a current address to any branch location and complete a card application form.

Note: Online applications for library cards do not offer access to digital apps or materials checkout until ID and proof of residence are brought to a KRLS branch for verification

The parent or guardian of a minor child (under 15 years of age) will need to sign the library card application.

A PIN is a Personal Identification Number.

You will also be given a PIN when registering for a library card.

The PIN is needed for placing your own requests and for viewing selected information in your library account. A PIN is a 4 digit number that provides an extra level of security when using your library card to reserve books, to access some online databases, or to look up your personal information in the catalog.

You will be asked to choose a PIN when you register for your library card.

If you currently have a Kitchigami Regional Library System card and would like to get a PIN, please visit, email or call any branch library so that a PIN can be created for your account.

If you lose your library card report the loss at once to any branch library, by phone or in person.

You are responsible for materials taken out with the card until the card is reported lost or stolen. Once a new card is purchased your lost card will be inactivated.

You will be asked to pay a small replacement fee.

Your library card is renewed every 3 years at any branch.

A borrower card is valid for three (3) years and must be renewed every three (3) years. A borrower card may be renewed by presentation at any KRLS branch library or by emailing the following information to the patron’s home library: Name, Address, Telephone number and Email address and KRLS borrower card number. Any outstanding fees must be paid before a borrower card is renewed.

You can use your library card at all nine branches and the mobile library in the Kitchigami Regional Library System.

Yes, there are a few ways you can find your account info.

Borrowers are able to see what materials they have borrowed, what requests they have placed, cancel outstanding requests that are no longer needed, and view any fees due on their account.

You will need your 14-digit library card number and your PIN to access the library borrower account information on either the library’s catalog workstations or through the library’s web site at your home, work or other off-site location by going to the “my account” page.

Any circulating KRLS item may be renewed once if no other customer is waiting for it.

This does not apply to items from an interlibrary loan (non-krls item).

Materials may be renewed at the library, over the phone, or through the online catalog.

Use the following instructions to renew materials online:

  1. Click the “My Account” link on our website. It can be found at the top of this page in the primary navigation of the site.
  2. Enter your last name, 14 digit library card number, PIN, then hit Submit.
  3. Click “Checked Out Items”.
  4. Check the boxes next to the items you wish to renew.
  5. Click the Renew Selected Items button above the list.

The new due date will appear under the status column. If renewal is denied, red text will appear.

If you experience difficulty renewing items, contact your local library:

  • You may be blocked for checking out more materials because of unpaid fees, or an expired library card
  • You may have too many non-book materials checked out
  • There may be another customer on the waiting list

Reserve circulating items in the library’s collection by placing a hold.

You may place an item on hold if it is checked out to someone else or shelved at another Kitchigami Regional Library System branch library.

Place a hold on-line on our catalog.

When you place a hold, the item is sent to the location you specify as soon as it is available. You may reserve a maximum of 25 items at any one time.

When your hold is available for pick up at your local branch you will receive an automated email or text message notification. Please make sure your library card
information is updated with your current email or cell phone number.

If you no longer need your hold, please hand it to a library staff member. Or, cancel it any time online, by telephone or in person.

Any item borrowed from the Kitchigami Regional Library System may be returned to any branch library.

Please bring the item to the KRLS branch of your choice and place it in the return spot at the location. Each location should have a clearly labeled spot or container for returns.

Interlibrary loans

Can’t find it in KRLS catalog?

Interlibrary loans is the process for requesting items from other Minnesota libraries. Use MnLINK to place interlibrary loan requests. MnLINK electronically links you to the catalogs for the many library resources in Minnesota.

TIP: Always check the KRL catalog before requesting items through MnLINK. Titles owned by KRLS will arrive faster if requested directly from our catalog.

Still can’t find it?

If you are unable to locate a title you are searching for within our KRLS catalog and within MnLINK, you may request it using this Interlibrary Loan form. Always check our catalog and MnLINK before using this form. Please print this out and give completed form to your local librarian. The more information you provide, the better chance we have of finding a copy to borrow for you.

Request to reconsider library materials, resources, or displays

  • Patrons may have a concern about library materials, resources, messaging, displays, or the lack of a specific item or subject matter. A concerned patron who is dissatisfied with informal discussions will be offered a request for reconsideration form and must complete that form to continue the process
